Why We Built This Tile Calculator
A while ago, we were remodeling a living room. Standing in the hardware store, staring at boxes of beautiful ceramic tiles, trying to do math in our heads. We wondered if a room of 12 by 15 feet with 24 by 24 inches tiles would need 45 tiles or 50. We ended up buying too few, and by the time we went back, that specific batch color was sold out.
That frustrating experience made us build this floor tile calculator. Whether you are doing a DIY bathroom renovation, measuring for a kitchen backsplash, or acting as a contractor, getting the exact tile count including proper wastage saves you money and headaches.
The Tiles Calculation Formula How It Works
If you prefer doing things the traditional way with a pen and paper, here is the exact tiles calculation formula our tool uses behind the scenes:
1. Find Area: Room Length × Room Width = Total Room Area
2. Find Tile Area: Tile Length × Tile Width = Single Tile Area
3. Base Tiles Needed: Total Room Area ÷ Single Tile Area
4. Factor in Wastage: Base Tiles + Wastage Percentage = Total Tiles Required
The trickiest part is usually unit conversion. People often measure the room in meters or feet, but the tiles are sold in centimeters or inches. Our calculator handles all these unit conversions automatically.
